Math: This week in math we are working on solving Word problems using measurement, addition with regrouping, and subtraction with borrowing.
*Our grade will be on Friday
**We have a New Timed Fact Drill: It is still subtraction facts. This time it is 50 problems and a 3-minute time limit. We will take one of these drills every Friday and the best score of 9 will count as a daily grade on the report card.
If you need to make flash cards to practice subtraction facts that is a great idea.
Reading: Our weekly story we will read in our reading book is "Red, White, and Blue". It is about the history of our country's flag.
Every week in reading we will practice reading comprehension skills. We will read various passages as a whole group and in small groups. We will ask Who, What, When, Where, and Why questions, We will ask about the Author's Purpose and the Main Idea, and Specific Details. We will also practice finding evidence to back up an answer "in the passage".
Each test will have some phonics questions based on our weekly spelling words, some questions using vocabulary words correctly in a sentence, and then a cold read passage (one they have never seen before) with comprehension questions. Two of which are Written answers.
*The weekly reading test will now be given on Thursdays to relieve some of the Friday tests.
NIGHTLY READING PASSAGE: For Homework your child will bring home a reading passage every Monday. YOU have been doing a great job signing each night your child reads to you. :)
Please have your child read the entire passage aloud to you and then sign your initials in the box for Mon. Repeat this process throughout the rest of the week. Turn them in on Friday.
ON THE BACK: We have been putting a list of VOCABULARY words on the back of the weekly passage. It has the same boxes to sign at the bottom. Your child will get an EXTRA point every Friday if you have signed those boxes too. Just have your child read the vocab. words and put your initials in the box each night. This helps them on the weekly Vocabulary section of our reading tests.
**** We DO HAVE a passage this week***** for HOMEWORK.
Spelling: This week we are words spelled with -ed and -ing.
*A copy of your child's spelling words and what independent sentences they are expected to write each week is IN YOUR CHILD'S GREEN FOLDER. Please KEEP it in there for reference.
Homework: Comes home every Monday.
Your child will have spelling homework every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They turn it all in on Friday.
*Our weekly spelling test will be on Friday.
